Smart parking system

An automated parking solution that tracks bay occupancy in real time and guides drivers straight to a free space.

Smart parking system

Project overview

Finding a space in a busy lot wastes time, fuel, and patience — and operators rarely have hard numbers on how full they actually are. We built a system that answers both problems from the same set of sensors.

What we built

Each bay carries an occupancy sensor that reports its state to a local controller, which aggregates the lot and publishes updates over MQTT. Overhead indicators point drivers toward open bays, while a web dashboard gives operators live counts and historical utilisation.

The design is deliberately modular: the same building block covers one row or an entire multi-level structure — you add sensors and controllers, not new software.

Why it matters

  • Less circling — drivers are directed, not left to hunt.
  • Real utilisation data — operators plan around measured peaks instead of estimates.

Good automation removes a chore you had stopped noticing you did.

Outcomes

  • Live occupancy for every bay, with no manual counting
  • Drivers guided to open spaces, cutting the time spent circling
  • Operators see utilisation trends and peak hours at a glance
  • Modular design scales from a single lot to a multi-level structure
