Smart irrigation system

A soil-aware irrigation controller that waters only when plants need it, driven by moisture readings and a schedule you can override from your phone.

Smart irrigation system

Project overview

Timer-based irrigation waters on a clock, not on need — so it runs in the rain and skips the dry spell it never measured. This controller waters the ground based on what the ground is actually telling it.

What we built

Soil-moisture probes feed a controller that opens and closes irrigation valves against both the live readings and a schedule. A companion app shows current moisture, lets you water on demand, and adjusts the plan — while the controller keeps enforcing its schedule locally if the network goes quiet.

Why it matters

  • Water on evidence — moisture thresholds prevent both over- and under-watering.
  • Hands-off, but never locked out — the schedule runs itself, and you can still step in from your phone.

The best system is the one you forget is there, right up until you need it.

Outcomes

  • Watering driven by soil moisture, not a blind timer
  • Noticeably lower water use across the season
  • Manual override and scheduling from anywhere
  • Runs its own schedule even when the network drops
